J. Philip Newell - March 2010

Listening for the Heartbeat of God: A Celtic Spirituality
St Columba Hotel, Isle of Iona
20 – 27 March 2010
Led by J. Philip Newell & Ali Newell

In the Celtic tradition, John the Beloved is remembered as the disciple who leaned against Jesus at the last supper. It was said of him that he therefore heard the heartbeat of God. He becomes an image of the practice of listening for the beat of God’s presence within life - within ourselves and one another and within the whole of creation. ‘Listening for the Heartbeat of God’ will be a week of presentations and sharing, of pilgrimage and community led by J. Philip Newell, along with his wife Alison, in which we will practise a spirituality of listening as the key to personal transformation in our lives and world.

Each day will begin and end together with the rhythm of prayer and meditation, either at the Abbey or elsewhere on the island. The mornings will be given to teaching and sharing, and the afternoons to silence and hiking. On at least one of the days we will walk the island pilgrimage route together, so sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing are essential! Wholesome breakfasts and evening meals, with provision from the organic gardens of the hotel, will be an important part of our shared community life. Lunches and afternoon hours will be free for solitude and rest.

Formerly Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, Philip is currently Writer Theologian for the Scottish Cathedral of the Isles as well as Companion Theologian for the American Spirituality Centre of Casa del Sol in New Mexico. He is internationally acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality, including his best known titles Listening for the Heartbeat of God and his poetic book of prayer Sounds of the Eternal. He is a Church of Scotland minister with a passion for ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. Canadian by birth, he lives in Edinburgh with his family where he undertook his doctoral research in Celtic Christianity. Since then he has played a leading role on both sides of the Atlantic in the re-birthing of a creation spirituality for today.
